Urology

Urology is the branch of medicine that focuses on the diseases of the male and female urinary-tract system and the male reproductive organs. The urinary system is responsible for the elimination of waste material from the body, and to maintain the blood volume, blood pressure, blood pH, and the levels of electrolytes and other metabolites. Different urological conditions include the infection of the urinary tract, the presence of kidney stones, problems with controlling urine, and other prostate complications. The symptoms of such conditions may include a feeling of tiredness, lack of appetite, blood in urine, and vomiting.

Hameedah Memorial Hospital also offers the procedure of Lithotripsy to treat kidney stones that are too large to pass through the urinary tract. Using focused ultrasonic shock waves, the large stone is broken into smaller stones which can easily pass through the urine. Using this guided technique, we help patients to avoid unnecessary invasive surgical procedures for stone removal.

Hameedah Memorial Hospital has on its roster some of the best urologists in the country offering comprehensive urology services to diagnose and treat diseases of the urinary tract. We bring advanced skills and expertise to treat the most complex conditions affecting men and women of all ages. With our department’s multidisciplinary leadership in urology and lithotripsy, we have become a pioneer in urological care and provide a complete range of state-of-the-art in-patient and out-patient clinical services to ensure your health and well-being.

What are the different types of kidney stones one might develop?

Types of Kidney Stones:

Kidney stones are hard deposits that form inside your kidneys. They are made up of minerals and salts that are normally dissolved in your urine. When the concentration of these substances is too high, or if you don’t drink enough fluids, they can crystallize and form stones.

Here are the most common types of kidney stones:

  • Calcium Stones: These are the most common type, accounting for about 80% of kidney stones. They are formed when calcium combines with other substances in your urine, like oxalate or phosphate.

    • Calcium Oxalate Stones: These are the most common type of calcium stone. They can form in people with high levels of oxalate in their urine, which can be caused by a diet high in oxalate-rich foods (like spinach, rhubarb, and chocolate) or certain medical conditions.
    • Calcium Phosphate Stones: These are less common than calcium oxalate stones. They can form in people with high levels of phosphate in their urine, which can be caused by certain medical conditions, such as hyperparathyroidism.
  • Struvite Stones: These stones are formed from magnesium, ammonium, and phosphate. They are often caused by a urinary tract infection (UTI). They can grow very large and can block the urinary tract.

  • Uric Acid Stones: These stones are formed when there is too much uric acid in the urine. This can happen in people with gout, high levels of purines in their diet (like red meat and shellfish), or certain medical conditions.

  • Cystine Stones: These stones are formed when the amino acid cystine builds up in the urine. This is a rare condition that is usually inherited.

It’s important to note that some people may have more than one type of kidney stone. For example, a person could have both calcium oxalate and uric acid stones.
